United We Sail!

With less than three weeks before the start of the second Mango Bowl Regatta, the Saint Lucia Yacht Club is delighted to announce that United Insurance will come onboard this year as a Silver Sponsor. The company is associated with competitive sailing events in other Caribbean islands, and in fact SLYC sailors have in the past year won the United Insurance J24 Match-racing Cup (November 2012, Barbados) and the Southern Caribbean J24 Championship (April 2013, Bequia).

According to General Manager, Faye Miller: “Currently, United Insurance is best known as the patrons of Secondary Schools’ Cricket.  We are extremely proud to have put our support behind yet another cadre of youth, this time in the arena of sailing. United Insurance is one of the foremost insurers of marine business locally and within the Caribbean.  It was only fitting, we thought, to give back in the way of sponsorship of an endeavour such as this regatta. We commend the St Lucia Yacht Club for their continued efforts to make a contribution towards the development of youth and wish the organisers every success in the staging of the 2013 Mango Bowl Regatta.”

Mango Bowl Coordinator, Anne Purvis, reports that registrations for the Nov 29-Dec 1 regatta are ahead of last year, and with a 10% fee discount deadline this week, she expects to have a rush of applications before the weekend. Boats are already committed from Martinique, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad, and locally there is a flurry of activity as the SLYC youth crews of Sugar Beach Attitude and Grayling take to the water in an intensive training schedule for the big event.

The weekend of racing takes place on Saturday morning from 8.55am with approximate afternoon finish around 3pm; Sunday’s session starts at 8:55am and is anticipated to finish around 1pm. In total there will be nine races for the J24/Surprise classes, and five for Racing/Cruising Yacht classes.

After the unexpected popularity of last year’s Mango Bowl Free Spectator Boat, this year Endless Summer will once again host sailing fans and sponsor representatives out in Rodney Bay, as close to the action as possible. Space is limited so spectators must sign up in advance to avoid disappointment – all the information can be found at stluciayachtclub.com.

Saint Lucia Yacht Club would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the Mango Bowl Regatta 2013, the island’s only major competitive sailing event:  IGY Rodney Bay Marina, Blue Waters, Saint Lucia Tourist Board, United Insurance, Mount Gay Rum, Heineken, Island Waterworld, Boardwalk Bar & Café Ole, Johnson’s Hardware, Regis Electronics, Rodney Bay Sails.
